Rodent Migraine Studies

Rodent migraine studies use mice and rats to investigate migraine-related behaviors, biological mechanisms, and responses to potential treatments. Researchers induce or model migraine-like states and assess changes such as light aversion, altered activity, facial expressions of pain, and sensitivity to normally harmless touch, often in relation to signaling molecules such as calcitonin gene-related peptide. These behavioral measures provide observable indicators of sensory and pain processing that complement molecular and physiological analyses. The approach supports evaluation of migraine mechanisms, comparison of experimental interventions, and development of therapies while helping researchers interpret how nervous-system changes influence behavior.

2011

Migraine and its transformation to chronic migraine are immense healthcare burdens in need of improved treatment options. We seek to define how neural immune signaling modulates the susceptibility to migraine, modeled in vitro using spreading depression in hippocampal slice cultures, as a means to develop novel therapeutic targets.

Breeding Management in Rodent Studies

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Breeding management supports the 3Rs by minimizing unnecessary animal production and ensuring that only the number of animals required for a study is generated. Effective breeding strategies help reduce surplus animals and...

Investigating Migraine-Like Behavior Using Light Aversion in Mice

Rodents are not able to report migraine symptoms. Here, we describe a manageable test paradigm (light/dark and open field assays) to measure light aversion, one of the most common and bothersome symptoms in patients with migraines.

2013

Neuroblast migration is a crucial step in postnatal neurogenesis. The protocol described here can be used to investigate the role of candidate regulators of neuroblast migration by employing DNA/small hairpin RNA (shRNA) nucleofection and a 3D migration assay with neuroblasts isolated from the rodent postnatal rostral migratory stream.
