Apolipoprotein Analysis

Apolipoprotein analysis is the measurement and characterization of proteins that bind and transport lipids in blood, providing insight into lipoprotein structure, metabolism, and cardiovascular risk. In biochemistry, assays quantify specific apolipoproteins in serum or plasma using immunochemical methods, while electrophoresis, chromatography, or mass spectrometry can assess their distribution, interactions, and molecular composition. These measurements help distinguish lipoprotein abnormalities, evaluate disorders of lipid metabolism, and complement conventional cholesterol and triglyceride testing. Analysis of apolipoprotein production, modification, and clearance also supports research into atherosclerosis, metabolic disease, biomarker development, and therapeutic responses.

We describe a high-throughput, multiplex, and targeted proteomic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) assay developed with potential for clinical translation. The test can quantitate potential markers and risk factors for neurodegeneration, such as the apolipoprotein E variants (E2, E3 and E4), and measure their allelic expression.
