Benchtop Fabrication

Benchtop fabrication is the small-scale construction and modification of devices, materials, or experimental components using accessible laboratory tools rather than industrial manufacturing systems. In bioengineering, researchers typically translate computer-aided designs into physical prototypes through processes such as machining, molding, laser cutting, additive manufacturing, or manual assembly, followed by dimensional and functional testing. This approach supports rapid iteration of microfluidic platforms, tissue-engineering scaffolds, biosensors, and research instruments while reducing development time and cost. Benchtop fabrication also enables laboratories to customize designs for specific biological experiments, evaluate performance before scale-up, and adapt prototypes as experimental requirements change.

Fermentors are used to increase culture yield and productivity of bioengineered cells. After screening multiple microbial or animal cell culture candidates in shake flasks, the next logical step is to increase the selected culture’s biomass with the fermentor. This video demonstrates the setup and operation of a typical benchtop bioreactor system.

2022

The viscoelastic properties of mucus play a critical role in mucociliary clearance. However, traditional mucus rheological techniques require complex and time-consuming approaches. This study provides a detailed protocol for the use of a benchtop rheometer that can rapidly and reliably perform viscoelastic measurements.

The fabrication of electrically addressable, high-aspect-ratio (> 1000:1) metal nanowires separated by gaps of single nanometers using either sacrificial layers of aluminum and silver or self-assembled monolayers as templates is described. These nanogap structures are fabricated without a clean room or any photo- or electron-beam lithographic processes by a form of edge lithography known as nanoskiving.

This protocol describes how to generate carbon fiber electrodes. The electrodes are subsequently used to detect catecholamine release from vesicles with carbon fiber amperometry.

Fabricating Cotton Analytical Devices

To investigate simple fabrication approaches for multiple assay needs, we created a fluid-absorbing channel system made of cotton material. This device was used to establish a multiple detection platform, and solve contamination issues that commonly affect lateral flow-based biomedical devices, for clinical urinalysis of nitrite, total protein, and urobilinogen.
