Chitosan Surgical Adhesive

Chitosan surgical adhesive is a bioengineered tissue adhesive made from chitosan, a biodegradable polysaccharide derived from chitin, used to bond or seal biological tissues and support wound closure. Its positively charged polymer chains interact with negatively charged cell surfaces, proteins, and extracellular matrix components, while hydrogen bonding and swelling in aqueous environments promote wet-tissue adhesion and form a protective barrier. In bioengineering, chitosan adhesives are investigated for hemostasis, surgical sealing, wound healing, and localized drug delivery, where biodegradability and chemical modifiability can help tailor adhesion strength, degradation, and biological compatibility for specific clinical applications.
