Crambe Meal

Crambe meal is the protein- and fiber-rich residue left after oil is extracted from Crambe abyssinica seeds, making it a biomass stream of interest for sustainable bioengineering. Its key limitation is glucosinolate content: when the plant tissue is disrupted and hydrated, myrosinase hydrolyzes these compounds into products such as isothiocyanates, which can affect palatability, animal safety, and microbial activity. Bioengineering approaches can target glucosinolate reduction, enzymatic detoxification, or microbial conversion to improve the meal’s value. Treated Crambe meal may support protein recovery, bio-based chemicals, soil amendments, and biofumigation, linking agricultural byproduct utilization with safer, higher-value bioprocessing.

A lengthening in meal duration represents orofacial nociceptive behavior in rodents similar to the guarding behavior of humans with orofacial pain. Eating is a behavior that requires no training or animal manipulation, requires cortical participation, and is not competing with other experimentally induced behaviors, distinguishing this assay from alternative reflex or operant measurements.

The side stream from plant oil production of Crambe abyssinica has limited value. The purpose of this study was to find methods for extruding materials based on this side stream, demonstrating that products with a higher value can be produced. The extrudates were found to have promising properties.
