Microsurgery Heart Position

Microsurgery heart position refers to the precise placement, orientation, and stabilization of the heart or cardiac tissue during microsurgical procedures, where small positional changes can affect access, function, and experimental outcomes. Under magnification, microsurgical instruments and controlled manipulation expose the target region while limiting tissue distortion and preserving relevant anatomical relationships. In bioengineering, accurate heart positioning supports cardiac tissue handling, device placement, vascular or structural repair, and the construction of reproducible experimental models. Consistent positioning also improves imaging, measurement, and comparison across procedures, helping researchers evaluate engineered tissues, biomaterials, and microscale interventions with greater reliability.

Here, we describe a pre-clinical animal model for studying the pathophysiology of ischemia-reperfusion injury in reconstructive microsurgery. This free skin flap model based on the superficial caudal epigastric vessels in the rat may also allow for the evaluation of different therapies and compounds to counteract ischemia-reperfusion injury-related damage.

Robotized Testing of Camera Positions to Determine Ideal Configuration for Stereo 3D Visualization of Open-Heart Surgery

2021

The human depth perception of 3D stereo videos depends on the camera separation, point of convergence, distance to, and familiarity of the object. This paper presents a robotized method for rapid and reliable test data collection during live open-heart surgery to determine the ideal camera configuration.

A Novel Ex vivo Culture Method for the Embryonic Mouse Heart

Developmental studies in the mouse are hampered by the inaccessibility of the embryo during gestation. To promote the long-term culture of the embryonic heart at late stages of gestation, we developed a protocol in which the excised heart is cultured in a semi-solid, dilute Matrigel.
