Pest Management

Pest management is the planned prevention, monitoring, and control of organisms that damage crops, livestock, ecosystems, or human health. It combines methods such as biological control, habitat modification, chemical treatment, and genetic or molecular approaches, selected according to pest biology, population thresholds, and environmental conditions. In bioengineering, researchers develop targeted tools including engineered microbes, RNA interference, pest-resistant plants, and sterile-insect strategies to disrupt reproduction, feeding, or pathogen transmission. These approaches can improve control precision, reduce reliance on broad-spectrum pesticides, and support sustainable agriculture and disease prevention when integrated with ecological monitoring and risk assessment.

The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a worldwide pest of agriculture. A deeper understanding of its biology is key to control medfly populations and thus reduce economic impact. Embryo microinjection is a fundamental tool allowing both germ-line transformation and reverse genetics studies in this species.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

Procedures of Laboratory Fumigation for Pest Control with Nitric Oxide Gas

2017

This paper describes nitric oxide (NO) fumigation protocols for postharvest pest control. Fumigation chambers are flushed with nitrogen (N2) to establish ultralow oxygen conditions before NO is injected. At the end, chambers are flushed with N2 to dilute NO before exposing products to ambient air to prevent exposure to NO2.
