Polycaprolactone Elastin Collagen

Polycaprolactone elastin collagen is a biomaterial composite that combines a biodegradable synthetic polymer with two extracellular matrix proteins to support tissue repair and regeneration. Polycaprolactone provides structural strength and gradual degradation, while collagen promotes cell attachment and elastin contributes elasticity, allowing the material’s mechanical and biological properties to complement one another. In bioengineering, this combination can form scaffolds designed to resemble aspects of native tissue and provide a supportive environment for cell growth. Its tunable composition makes it relevant to tissue engineering, wound healing, and the development of regenerative medical constructs.

We describe simultaneous mechanical testing and 3D-imaging of the arterial wall of isolated, live human resistance arteries, and Fiji and Ilastik image analyses for the quantification of elastin and collagen spatial organization and volume densities. We discuss the use of these data in mathematical models of arterial wall mechanics.

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

2014

Elastin-like polypeptides are stimulus-responsive biopolymers with applications ranging from recombinant protein purification to drug delivery. This protocol describes the purification and characterization of elastin-like polypeptides and their peptide or protein fusions from Escherichia coli using their lower critical solution temperature phase transition behavior as a simple alternative to chromatography.
