Acid Growth Phenomenon

The acid growth phenomenon is a plant cell elongation response in which auxin promotes cell-wall loosening through extracellular acidification. Auxin stimulates proton pumps in the plasma membrane, increasing proton export into the cell wall and lowering its pH; acidic conditions activate expansins and other wall-loosening processes, allowing the wall to extend as water uptake and turgor pressure drive cell expansion. This mechanism helps explain rapid growth in shoots, coleoptiles, and other plant tissues, and provides a foundation for studying auxin signaling, gravitropism, phototropism, and the coordination of cell growth with environmental cues.

Tip-of-the-Tongue Phenomenon

2025

The tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) phenomenon is a cognitive experience characterized by a temporary inability to retrieve specific information from memory despite having a strong feeling of knowing the information. Although individuals cannot access the target word or detail, they frequently recall related elements, such as its initial letter, syllable count, or context. This partial retrieval often causes frustration, as one might recognize a familiar face or know that a name starts with a specific...

The term anastasis refers to the phenomenon in which dying cells reverse a cell suicide process at a late stage, repair themselves, and ultimately survive. Here we demonstrate protocols for detecting and tracking cells that undergo anastasis.

Bronsted-Lowry Acids and Bases

The acid-base reaction class has been studied for quite some time. In 1680, Robert Boyle reported traits of acid solutions that included their ability to dissolve many substances, to change the colors of certain natural dyes, and to lose these traits after coming in contact with alkali (base) solutions. In the eighteenth century, it was recognized that acids have a sour taste, react with limestone to liberate a gaseous substance (now known to be CO2), and interact with alkalis to form neutral...
