Adherent Cells

Adherent cells are cells that require attachment to a solid surface or extracellular matrix to spread, survive, and often proliferate in culture. In laboratory conditions, they settle onto treated plastic or coated substrates, where cell-surface adhesion proteins and integrins connect the cytoskeleton to the underlying matrix and support signaling for growth and organization. Researchers maintain adherent cells in culture vessels and monitor their morphology, confluence, and detachment during passaging. These cultures are widely used to study cell biology, disease mechanisms, drug responses, and tissue-specific functions, making controlled attachment an important factor in reproducible biological experiments.
