Animal Food Screening

Animal Food Screening is the systematic testing of feed, forage, and other materials given to animals to assess nutritional quality and detect hazards that could affect animal health or enter the food chain. It works by collecting representative samples and applying laboratory analyses, including chemical, microbiological, or molecular assays, to identify contaminants, pathogens, adulterants, or nutrient imbalances. In biology and agricultural research, screening supports feed formulation, disease prevention, regulatory compliance, and evaluation of experimental diets. Reliable results help researchers and producers select safer inputs, interpret animal responses, and reduce risks to livestock, laboratory animals, and consumers.

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is an isothermal nucleic acid amplification test (iNAAT) that has attracted broad interest in the pathogen detection field. Here, we present a multi-laboratory-validated Salmonella LAMP protocol as a rapid, reliable, and robust method for screening Salmonella in animal food and confirming presumptive Salmonella from culture isolation.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Genetic modification of foods has been a controversial issue due to debated concerns over health and environmental safety. This experiment demonstrates technical understanding of how food DNA is genetically identified, allowing for educated decision making about the safety and potential dangers of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food supplies. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used to amplify food DNA...

Drosophila as a Model Organism The common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is a widely used model organism in biology, though it may be more commonly recognized as a fruit-loving pest. There are multiple reasons that make D. melanogaster an excellent experimental organism: their roughly two-week generation time allows studying multiple generations, they are easily maintained in very small tubes, and their sexual dimorphism enables investigators to easily distinguish between males that have...
