Avian Species Identification

Avian species identification is the process of determining which bird species an individual belongs to, an essential foundation for biological research, biodiversity assessment, and conservation. Identification typically combines observable traits such as plumage, body shape, size, behavior, vocalizations, and habitat with field guides, photographs, recordings, or genetic evidence when visual features are insufficient. Accurate identification supports population monitoring, migration studies, ecological surveys, and detection of changes in species distributions. It also helps researchers distinguish closely related or visually similar birds, improving the reliability of taxonomic records and informing strategies to protect habitats and threatened populations.

Scavengers have potential to translocate infectious transmissible spongiform encephalopathy prions in their feces to disease-free areas. We detail methods used to determine if mouse-adapted scrapie prions remain infectious after passage though the digestive tract of American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), a common consumer of dead animals.
