Bacterial Predator Life Cycle

The bacterial predator life cycle describes how predatory bacteria locate, invade, exploit, and lyse other bacterial cells, making it an important model of microbial interaction and biological control. In the well-studied Bdellovibrio cycle, motile attack-phase cells recognize susceptible prey, penetrate the outer membrane, and grow within the periplasm while converting the prey into a rounded bdelloplast. The predator then replicates from the prey’s nutrients, coordinates cell division, and releases progeny when the host envelope ruptures. Understanding these stages supports research on microbial ecology, bacterial evolution, antimicrobial strategies, and potential alternatives to conventional antibiotics.

The Angiosperm Life Cycle

2020

Plants have a life cycle split between two multicellular stages: a haploid stage—with cells containing one set of chromosomes—and a diploid stage—with cells containing two sets of chromosomes. The haploid stage is the gamete-producing gametophyte, and the diploid stage is the spore-producing sporophyte. Today, most plants grow from seeds and produce flowers and fruit; such plants are called angiosperms. Angiosperms begin as seeds—structures consisting of a protective seed coat, a nutrient...

Retrovirus Life Cycles

Retroviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome that undergoes a special form of replication. Once the retrovirus has entered the host cell, an enzyme called reverse transcriptase synthesizes double-stranded DNA from the retroviral RNA genome. This DNA copy of the genome is then integrated into the host’s genome inside the nucleus via an enzyme called integrase. Consequently, the retroviral genome is transcribed into RNA whenever the host’s genome is transcribed, allowing the retrovirus to...

The Life-Cycle Hypothesis

The Life-Cycle Hypothesis (LCH), formulated by Franco Modigliani, offers a framework for understanding how individuals allocate consumption and saving across their lifespan to optimize financial well-being. Instead of linking consumption strictly to current income, the LCH posits that individuals plan intertemporally, aiming for consumption smoothing by balancing saving and dissaving in accordance with expected changes in income over time.Intertemporal Consumption SmoothingThe hypothesis...

Biology is a natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their structure, function, development, interactions, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. The field's scope is extensive and divided into several specialized disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, ethology, genetics, and many more. All living things share a few key traits, including cellular organization, heritable genetic material and the ability to adapt/evolve, metabolism to regulate energy needs, the...
