Bowel Distension

Bowel distension is the expansion of the intestine caused by accumulating gas, fluid, or digestive contents, and it plays an important role in normal gastrointestinal function and disease. As the intestinal wall stretches, mechanoreceptors detect changes in tension and activate enteric and autonomic nerve pathways that regulate peristalsis, secretion, sphincter activity, and sensations such as fullness or discomfort. In biology and medicine, studying bowel distension helps explain intestinal motility, abdominal pain, bloating, and conditions involving obstruction or impaired transit. Experimental measurements of intestinal diameter, pressure, and muscle activity also support research into gastrointestinal physiology and potential treatments for motility disorders.

The mouse small bowel transplantation model has been recognized as an important tool to study mechanismes of immune rejection and screen new immunosuppressive drugs. However, this model is limited to use because the techniques involved is an extremely technically challenge. Now we introduce the modified technique.

Small bowel transplantation has become an accepted treatment option for patients with irreversible intestinal failure. Our experimental model of orthotopic small bowel transplantation in rats serves as a reliable tool to address underlying immunologic and inflammatory processes that complicate intestinal transplantation.

(2019)This video demonstrates the immunofluorescence staining of small bowel neuroendocrine tumor spheroids. The spheroids are fixed, permeabilized, and blocked and are then incubated with primary and secondary antibodies. A dye is added to stain nuclei before mounting and visualizing them under a fluorescent microscope.

DefinitionIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by recurrent combinations of abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.Pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndromeIts pathophysiology is multifactorial, involving disturbances in motility, sensory processing, microbial balance, barrier integrity, and gut–brain communication. These mechanisms interact to produce symptoms that vary across IBS subtypes.Altered Motility PatternsDisordered...

Chronic bowel diseases are a group of long-term conditions affecting the digestive tract, characterized by inflammation and damage to the gut lining. These conditions primarily include irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...
