C Elegans Developmental Biology

C. elegans developmental biology examines how the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans grows from a fertilized egg into an adult, providing a powerful model for understanding animal development. Its transparent body, invariant cell lineage, rapid life cycle, and well-characterized genome allow researchers to track cell division, differentiation, migration, and programmed cell death in living organisms. Genetic manipulation and microscopy reveal how conserved signaling pathways and regulatory genes control embryogenesis, organ formation, and larval development. Findings from C. elegans have clarified fundamental mechanisms in developmental genetics and continue to inform research on cell fate, tissue organization, aging, and human disease.

2023

Molecular signals play a major role in the complex processes occurring during embryonic development. These signals regulate activities such as cell differentiation and migration, which contribute to the formation of specific cell types and structures. The use of molecular approaches allows researchers to investigate these physical and chemical mechanisms in detail. This video will review a brief history of the study of molecular events during development. Next, key questions asked by molecular...

The easiness of maintaining and propagating the nematode C. elegans make it a nice model organism to work with. The possibility of synchronizing worms allows the work with a significant amount of subjects at the same developmental stage, what facilitates the study of one particular process in many animals.

An Introduction to Developmental Genetics

Development is the complex process through which a single-celled embryo transforms into a multicellular organism. Developmental processes are guided by information encoded in an organism's DNA, and geneticists are trying to understand how this information leads to a fully formed organism. This video reviews seminal research in the field of developmental biology, including the identification of specific genes that control various embryonic processes. An introduction to the major questions asked...

RNAi in C. elegans

2023

RNA interference (RNAi) is a widely used technique in which double stranded RNA is exogenously introduced into an organism, causing knockdown of a target gene. In the nematode, C. elegans, RNAi is particularly easy and effective because it can be delivered simply by feeding the worms bacteria that express double stranded RNA (dsRNA) that is complementary to a gene of interest. First, this video will introduce the concept of RNA interference and explain how it causes targeted gene knockdown.
