Cardiac Development Study

Cardiac Development Study is the investigation of how the heart forms, matures, and acquires its structure and function during embryonic and postnatal development. It examines coordinated processes including cardiac progenitor specification, cell migration, differentiation, tissue morphogenesis, and signaling between developing cells. Researchers use genetic, cellular, molecular, and imaging approaches to connect developmental events with the formation of chambers, valves, conduction tissues, and blood vessels. This field clarifies the origins of congenital heart defects, supports disease modeling and regenerative medicine, and provides a foundation for studying how developmental pathways may be adapted for cardiac repair.

2016

This manuscript describes the creation of defined engineered cardiac tissues using surface marker expression and cell sorting. The defined tissues can then be used in a multi-tissue bioreactor to investigate mechanisms of cardiac cell therapy in order to provide a functional, yet controlled, model system of the human heart.

Streptococcus pneumoniae forms discrete non-purulent microscopic lesions in the heart. Outlined is the protocol for a murine model of cardiac microlesion formation. Instruction is provided on microlesion visualization using microscopy, discrimination between early and late microlesions, and methods to detect cardiac remodeling in hearts of convalescent animals.

This protocol describes dissection of mouse embryonic thyroid anlagen and the culture of explants on semiporous filters or on microscopy plastic slides. This system is ideal to study morphogenetic or differentiation events occurring during thyroid development of wild type or knockout embryos, and is amenable to gain- and loss-of-function experiments.
