Cardiac Morphology Analysis

Cardiac morphology analysis is the systematic study of the heart’s form, including the size, shape, organization, and relationships of its chambers, valves, walls, and associated vessels. It works by combining anatomical observation with quantitative measurements from techniques such as microscopy, histology, echocardiography, or other medical imaging, allowing structural features to be compared across samples, developmental stages, or disease states. In biology, this analysis links cardiac structure to function and helps identify remodeling, malformation, injury, or treatment-related changes. These findings support research in development, physiology, pathology, and cardiovascular medicine while providing measurable endpoints for experiments and clinical assessment.

Contrast enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging allows comprehensive in vivo assessment of the heart in small animal models of cardiovascular disease. Here we detail the procedures to perform CMR imaging, reconstruction and analysis using Small Animal Lock-Locker Inversion Recovery (SALLI) in rats.
