Chronic Productive Cough

Chronic productive cough is a persistent cough that produces mucus or phlegm, signaling ongoing irritation, inflammation, or excess secretion in the airways. It occurs when airway sensory receptors detect mucus or other material, triggering coordinated respiratory muscle contractions that propel secretions toward the throat for clearance. Common biological contributors include chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, respiratory infections, and exposure to tobacco smoke or other irritants. Studying this symptom helps researchers connect airway structure and immune responses with impaired mucociliary clearance, while supporting the assessment of underlying disease, infection risk, and treatment effectiveness.

We describe a non-invasive imaging method for distinguishing inflammatory stages. Systemic delivery of luminol reveals areas of acute inflammation dependent upon MPO activity in neutrophils. In contrast, injection of lucigenin allows for visualization of chronic inflammation dependent upon Phox activity in macrophages.
