Cytometer Setup

Cytometer setup is the process of preparing and calibrating a cytometer to measure physical and fluorescent characteristics of cells or particles accurately. In a flow cytometer, the instrument aligns cells in a fluid stream, passes them through laser beams, and uses optical detectors to convert scattered light and fluorescence into digital signals; calibration and fluorescence compensation help maintain measurement quality and distinguish overlapping signals. Proper setup includes checking fluidics, configuring optical parameters, and running reference particles or control samples. Reliable setup supports immunophenotyping, cell-cycle analysis, viability assessment, and quantitative studies of cell populations in biological research.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.

Spaceflight blood diagnostics need innovation. Few demonstrations have been published illustrating in-flight, reduced-gravity health diagnostic technology. Here we present a method for construction and operation of a parabolic flight test rig for a prototype point-of-care flow-cytometry design, with components and preparation strategies adaptable to other setups.
