Diet Plug Bioassay

The diet plug bioassay is a laboratory method for evaluating how a substance affects an organism when delivered through a defined food source. In this approach, researchers incorporate a test compound into a standardized plug of artificial diet, expose experimental organisms under controlled conditions, and measure outcomes such as consumption, survival, growth, or development against an untreated control. This feeding-based assay supports biological screening in entomology, toxicology, and experimental biology, helping characterize dose-dependent effects and compare candidate compounds. Because it uses controlled diets and repeatable exposure conditions, the method can clarify how ingested substances influence organismal physiology and behavior.

Formation of the Platelet Plug

The platelet phase, the second stage of hemostasis, commences around 15-20 seconds after an injury. It follows and overlaps with the vascular phase, during which blood vessels constrict to minimize blood loss. As the injured blood vessel contracts, endothelial cells undergo contraction, revealing collagen fibers in the basement membrane and underlying connective tissue. Furthermore, the plasma membrane of endothelial cells becomes adhesive, preparing the site for platelet adhesion. Platelets...

We describe a simple cell-based bioassay for detecting, quantifying and monitoring the activity of members of the vascular endothelial growth factor family of ligands. The assay uses chimeric receptors expressed in a factor-dependent cell line to provide a semi-quantitative or quantitative assessment of receptor binding and cross-linking by the ligand.
