Disease Vector Control

Disease vector control comprises biological, environmental, chemical, and behavioral strategies that reduce the transmission of pathogens by organisms such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and other vectors. These interventions work by interrupting the vector life cycle or preventing contact between vectors and hosts, for example by removing breeding sites, applying larvicides or insecticides, using biological control agents, and deploying insecticide-treated bed nets. In biology and public health, vector control supports surveillance and outbreak prevention for diseases including malaria, dengue, and Lyme disease. Effective programs combine multiple approaches and adapt them to vector ecology, pathogen transmission patterns, and insecticide resistance.

This manuscript describes how viral vector-mediated local gene delivery provides an attractive way to express transgenes in the central nervous system. The protocol outlines all crucial steps to perform a viral vector injection in the substantia nigra of the rat to develop a viral vector-based animal model for Parkinson's disease.

The efficacy of public health pesticides targeting nuisance and disease-vector insects is not uniform across different ecological zones. Here we present a system of techniques using captive vector insects as sentinels for pesticide efficacy to derive electronic maps supporting the standard evaluation of pesticides across multiple environments.

Here, we describe an efficient and reproducible strategy to produce, titer, and quality-control batches of adeno-associated virus vectors. It allows the user to obtain a vector preparation with high-titer (≥1 x 1013 vector genomes/mL) and a high purity, ready for in vitro or in vivo use.
