Spatial Metabolite Distribution

Spatial metabolite distribution describes how small molecules, including sugars, lipids, amino acids, and signaling compounds, are organized across cells, tissues, or organisms. In biology, spatial metabolomics measures these patterns by preserving tissue architecture and combining imaging with mass spectrometry to detect and map metabolite ions at defined locations, often without labeling. The resulting molecular maps reveal metabolic gradients, cell-specific activities, tissue organization, and changes associated with development, disease, or environmental responses. Comparing distributions across biological conditions can connect localized metabolism to physiology and pathology, supporting biomarker discovery, disease research, and a more detailed understanding of cellular interactions.

2010

Microscopic analysis of γH2AX foci, which form following the phosphorylation of H2AX at Ser-139 in response to DNA double-strand breaks, has become an invaluable tool in radiation biology. Here we used an antibody to mono-methylated histone H3 at lysine 4 as an epigenetic marker of actively transcribing euchromatin, to evaluate the spatial distribution of radiation-induced γH2AX formation within the nucleus.

Detection of Human Fecal Metabolites Using a Bacterial Biosensor

2026

Begin with a bacterial biosensor culture suspended in a medium. These engineered bacteria produce a transcription factor that, upon binding to a specific fecal metabolite, activates a promoter associated with a fluorescent reporter gene.To this culture, add a filtered human fecal sample containing metabolites, such as lactate, that are involved in host-microbiome interactions.Dilute this mixture with a fresh medium to maintain an optimal reaction volume.Incubate without shaking to mimic the...

In this study, a series of methods are presented to prepare DESI-MSI samples from plants, and a procedure of DESI assembly installation, MSI data acquisition, and processing is described in detail. This protocol can be applied in several conditions for acquiring spatial metabolome information in plants.

Spatial Cueing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...
