Drosophila Metabolic Rate

Drosophila metabolic rate is the speed at which a fruit fly produces and uses energy to sustain cellular functions, movement, growth, and reproduction. Researchers commonly estimate it through respirometry, measuring oxygen consumption or carbon dioxide production while controlling conditions such as temperature, activity, sex, age, and nutritional state; these measurements reflect changes in mitochondrial respiration and whole-animal energy expenditure. Because Drosophila has a short generation time and well-characterized genetics, metabolic-rate analysis helps link genes, hormones, diet, and environmental stress to physiological performance. This approach supports studies of aging, obesity-related pathways, development, and metabolic disease biology.

2014

Metabolic disorders are among one of the most common diseases in humans. The genetically tractable model organism D. melanogaster can be used to identify novel genes that regulate metabolism. This paper describes a relatively simple method which allows studying the metabolic rate in flies by measuring their CO2 production.

Metabolic Rate

The human body is a powerhouse of energy, with every cell performing numerous functions that require energy. This energy production and consumption is measured by the metabolic rate, which quantifies the total heat generated by all the body's chemical reactions and mechanical work. This measurement helps to determine the rate of kilocalorie (kcal) consumption needed to fuel all ongoing activities. The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) measures the energy expended at rest. Several factors influence the...

This manuscript describes how herbicide metabolism rates can be effectively quantified with excised leaves from a dicot weed, thereby reducing variability and removing any possible confounding effects of herbicide uptake or translocation typically observed in whole-plant assays.

Mitochondria play central roles in the regulation of metabolism and homeostasis. Subtle changes in mitochondrial metabolism that affect organismal physiology could be difficult to detect in whole organism metabolomics studies. Here we describe an isolation method that enhances the detection of subtle metabolic shifts in Drosophila melanogaster.

Assessing Glucose Uptake in the Motor Neurons of Drosophila Larvae with Upregulated Glucose Metabolism

The video demonstrates a technique for measuring glucose uptake in Drosophila larval motor neurons using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based intracellular glucose sensor. After dissecting the larvae to expose the ventral nerve cord, the motor neurons are visualized through the fluorescence emitted by the sensor's donor fluorophore. When stimulated with glucose, FRET between the sensor's donor and acceptor fluorophores triggers the emission of fluorescence from the acceptor,...
