Exacerbation

Exacerbation is a sudden or gradual increase in the severity of symptoms or disease activity after a period of relative stability, making it an important concept in biology and medicine. It can occur when immune and inflammatory responses intensify, sometimes in response to infection, allergens, environmental stressors, or changes in treatment, causing greater tissue dysfunction and clinical symptoms. Studying exacerbations helps researchers identify biological triggers, distinguish transient flares from continuous disease progression, and evaluate biomarkers and interventions. This framework supports disease monitoring and treatment planning across conditions in which recurring episodes affect organ function and patient outcomes.

This paper describes a novel mouse model for the transition of pneumococcus from an asymptomatic colonizer to a disease-causing pathogen during viral infection. This model can be readily adapted to study polymicrobial and host-pathogen interactions during the different phases of disease progression and across various hosts.

Climate Change - Concepts

2019

The certainty of climate change remains a public controversy despite the consensus among approximately 97% of active climate researchers, who not only agree that the Earth’s climate is changing but also state that this change is intensified by human activity, predominantly carbon emissions 1. The disconnect between the public and the experts is partly due to poor understanding of the mechanisms involved in climate change as well as the differences among essential concepts such as weather and...

A Murine Model of Primed Mycobacterial Uveitis to Study Post-Infectious Uveitis

2025

This video demonstrates a method to generate a mouse model of primed mycobacterial uveitis (PMU) for studying post-infectious uveitis. Upon induction of PMU by intravitreal injection of heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a mouse previously immunized with the same immunogen, the progression of chronic inflammation in the eye is analyzed using imaging and histopathological...
