Eyelid Function

Eyelid function comprises the coordinated movements and structures that protect the eye, maintain a stable tear film, and regulate light entry. Blinking spreads tears across the cornea, removes debris, and limits evaporation, while the orbicularis oculi closes the eyelids and the levator palpebrae opens them; sensory input from the cornea can trigger a rapid protective blink through a trigeminal-facial reflex. Eyelids also help shield the eye from injury and excessive light, and their glands contribute components of the tear film. Studying eyelid function supports understanding of ocular biology, neurological reflexes, dry-eye disorders, and conditions that impair eyelid movement or closure.

Functional Groups

Functional groups are a group of atoms with characteristic properties, which when linked to the carbon skeleton of a molecule, alter the properties of that molecule. For example, the presence of certain functional groups on a molecule will make them hydrophilic, whereas others will make them hydrophobic. These functional groups are an indispensable part of organic chemistry and important components of biological molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Each...

This protocol allows one to identify factors that modulate functional beta cell mass to find potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of diabetes. The protocol consists of a streamlined method to assess islet replication and beta cell function in isolated rat islets following manipulation of gene expression with adenoviruses.

Assessing Retinal Microglial Phagocytic Function In Vivo Using a Flow Cytometry-based Assay

Microglial phagocytosis is critical for the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and inadequate phagocytic function has been implicated in pathology. However, assessing microglia function in vivo is technically challenging. We have developed a simple but robust technique for precisely monitoring and quantifying the phagocytic potential of microglia in a physiological setting.
