Functional Study

Functional study is the investigation of how biological components, such as genes, proteins, cells, or organs, work and contribute to biological processes. In biology, researchers manipulate or compare a component under defined conditions, then measure changes in molecular activity, cellular behavior, physiological responses, or observable traits to link its activity with a specific function. These studies help distinguish correlation from biological contribution, clarify mechanisms underlying development, disease, and adaptation, and evaluate potential therapeutic targets. By integrating experimental assays with genetic, biochemical, and imaging approaches, functional studies connect molecular structure to organism-level outcomes and support advances in basic research, diagnostics, and drug development.

Optokinetic response has been widely used to assess the visual functions of larval zebrafish. Nevertheless, the standard protocol for larval fish is not yet readily applicable in adults1-5. Here, we introduce how to measure the OKR of adult zebrafish using a new protocol which is established in our lab.

MazeSuite is a complete toolset to prepare, present and analyze navigational and spatial experiments. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIR) is an optical brain imaging technique that enables noninvasive and portable monitoring of cerebral blood oxygenation changes. This paper summarizes collective use of MazeSuite and fNIR within a cognitive processing learning paradigm.

This article introduces a child-friendly research protocol designed to improve data quality by reducing head movement during pediatric magnetoencephalography (MEG). We familiarize families with the MEG environment, train children to remain still using an MEG simulator, and correct for residual head movement artefacts using a real-time head movement detection system.

Serum Studies: Renal Function Tests

2025

Renal function tests are crucial for assessing kidney health, monitoring disease progression, and evaluating the kidneys' efficiency in waste elimination, fluid balance, and electrolyte regulation. These tests offer critical insights into kidney function, even though routine measurements may appear normal until there is a significant decline in the glomerular filtration rate or GFR. Typically, signs of kidney impairment only become evident when the GFR falls to about 50% of its normal level.

Reconstitution of a Kv Channel into Lipid Membranes for Structural and Functional Studies

2013

Procedures for complete reconstitution of a prototype voltage-gated potassium channel into lipid membranes are described. The reconstituted channels are suitable for biochemical assays, electrical recordings, ligand screening and electron crystallographic studies. These methods may have general applications to the structural and functional studies of other membrane proteins.
