Genetic Instability

Genetic instability is the increased tendency of cells or organisms to acquire changes in their DNA or chromosomes, altering genome integrity and biological function. It can result from DNA replication errors, damage, defective repair pathways, or weakened cell-cycle checkpoints, allowing mutations, copy-number changes, and chromosomal rearrangements to accumulate across cell divisions. In biology, genetic instability helps explain how populations adapt and diversify, while excessive instability can disrupt gene regulation and promote disease, particularly cancer. Studying its causes and consequences supports research on genome maintenance, inherited disorders, tumor development, and responses to treatments that target damaged or rapidly dividing cells.

Microtubule Instability

2023

Microtubules are hollow cylindrical filaments having a diameter of approximately 25 nm and a length that varies from 200 nm to 25 μm. GTP-bound tubulin subunits form αβ-heterodimers for microtubule assembly. These core building blocks interact longitudinally, polymerizing into protofilaments. The protofilaments then interact with one another through lateral bonding forces to form stable cylindrical microtubules. These cylindrical filaments are dynamic as they undergo repeated assembly and...
