Hair Regeneration Model

A hair regeneration model is an experimental system used to study how hair follicles form, cycle, and produce new hair, providing a way to investigate tissue renewal and repair. These models examine interactions among follicular stem cells, dermal papilla cells, and surrounding tissues, whose signals regulate transitions between growth, regression, and resting phases. In biology, hair regeneration models help researchers analyze developmental pathways, test how genetic or environmental factors affect follicle activity, and evaluate potential treatments for hair loss and skin disorders. They also provide a tractable framework for studying stem cell behavior and regenerative processes in mammalian tissues.

An Assay for Lateral Line Regeneration in Adult Zebrafish

Because many zebrafish models of neurological and non-neurological diseases are studied in the adult fish rather than the embryo/larvae, we developed a quantitative lateral line regenerative assay that can be applied to adult zebrafish disease models. The assay involved resolution at the 1) neuromast and 2) individual hair cell levels.

Hair Cells

Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. The outer hair cells serve other functions, such as sound amplification in the cochlea, and are not discussed in detail here. Hair cells are named after...

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...
