Heart Orientation

Heart orientation describes the three-dimensional position and alignment of the heart within the thorax, including its base, apex, chambers, and relationship to surrounding structures. During embryonic development, the primitive heart tube undergoes looping, rotation, and remodeling that establish the usual leftward-facing apex and the arrangement of the atria, ventricles, and great vessels. Understanding this orientation helps students and researchers interpret anatomical specimens, echocardiograms, radiographic images, and electrocardiograms, while enabling clinicians to identify abnormal positions associated with congenital heart conditions. It also supports accurate planning for cardiac procedures and comparative studies of cardiovascular structure and function.

Location and Orientation of the Heart

The human heart, despite its modest size and weight, is an organ of remarkable strength and endurance. Roughly the size of a fist, the heart weighs between 250 and 350 grams and is nestled within the mediastinum, the medial cavity of the thorax. It extends obliquely for about 12 to 14 cm, resting on the superior surface of the diaphragm. The heart is positioned anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the sternum, with two-thirds of its mass lying to the left of the midsternal line.

2013

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.

Decellularization of Whole Human Heart Inside a Pressurized Pouch in an Inverted Orientation

This method enables decellularization of a complex solid organ using a simple protocol based on osmotic shock and perfusion of ionic detergent with minimal organ matrix disruption. It comprises a novel decellularization technique for human hearts inside a pressurized pouch with real-time monitoring of flow dynamics and cellular debris outflow.

This is a case report of a patient with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) who received a total artificial heart (TAH) as a bridge to heart transplant. The TAH was successfully implanted with modifications to accommodate the patient's congenitally malformed heart.

A Novel Ex vivo Culture Method for the Embryonic Mouse Heart

Developmental studies in the mouse are hampered by the inaccessibility of the embryo during gestation. To promote the long-term culture of the embryonic heart at late stages of gestation, we developed a protocol in which the excised heart is cultured in a semi-solid, dilute Matrigel.
