Human Embryonic Kidney Cells

Human embryonic kidney cells are laboratory-grown human cells derived from embryonic kidney tissue and used as versatile models in cell biology and biotechnology. The widely used HEK 293 line was generated by introducing adenovirus type 5 DNA into primary kidney cells, enabling continuous growth in culture; researchers can then introduce plasmid DNA through transfection to produce selected proteins or investigate gene function. These cells support studies of receptor signaling, membrane transport, virus biology, and cellular responses, while engineered derivatives help produce recombinant proteins and viral vectors. Their reliable growth and high transfection efficiency make them valuable for biomedical research and pharmaceutical development.

(2014)This video shows a luciferase-based antiviral assay in human embryonic kidney cells infected with recombinant measles virus. It shows that serially diluted test compounds inhibit viral replication, leading to lower luminescence in a dose-dependent manner while maintaining host cell viability.

In this report we describe a method for the isolation and culture of the progenitor cell niche from the embryonic mouse kidney that can be used to study signaling pathways regulating stem/progenitor cells of the developing kidney. These cultured cells are highly accessible to small molecule and recombinant protein treatment, and importantly also to viral transduction, which allows efficient manipulation of candidate pathways.
