Hydrophilic Surface

A hydrophilic surface is a material interface that readily attracts and interacts with water, promoting spreading rather than droplet formation. Polar or charged chemical groups at the surface form favorable interactions, including hydrogen bonds and electrostatic attractions, which lower water contact angles and improve wetting. In biology, hydrophilic surfaces influence how proteins, cells, and microorganisms attach to materials, making surface wettability important in biomaterials, tissue culture, biosensors, and medical devices. Controlling surface chemistry can therefore improve biocompatibility, support cell adhesion, or reduce unwanted biological fouling, depending on the application.

A Protocol for the Production of Gliadin-cyanoacrylate Nanoparticles for Hydrophilic Coating

2016

This article presents a protocol for the production of protein-based nanoparticles that changes the hydrophobic surface to hydrophilic. The produced nanoparticle is an assembly of gliadin-cyanoacrylate diblock copolymers. Spray coating with the produced nanoparticle changes the surface of target material to a hydrophilic surface.

We present a protocol to synthesize Janus microhydrogels composed entirely of the same base material, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), with a clearly compartmentalized structure base on the phase separation of a supersaturated NIPAAm monomer solution. The synthesized Janus microhydrogels show unique properties such as anisotropic thermo-responsiveness and organophilic/hydrophilic loading capability.

Cell-surface Biotinylation Assay

2023

A cell can regulate the amount of particular proteins on its cell membrane through endocytosis, following which cell surface proteins are effectively sequestered in the cytoplasm. Once within a cell, these surface proteins can be either destroyed or “recycled” back to the membrane. The cell surface biotinylation assay provides researchers with a way to study these phenomena. The technique makes use of a derivative of the small molecule biotin, which can label surface proteins and then be...
