Platinum Electrodes

Platinum electrodes are electrically conductive interfaces used to transfer charge between electronic instruments and biological systems, making them important for measuring and controlling bioelectric activity. Their platinum surface supports electron transfer while resisting corrosion, allowing ionic currents in tissues or electrolyte solutions to be detected as electrical signals and, when driven by an external source, enabling stimulation. In biology, platinum electrodes are used in electrophysiology, neural recording, cardiac studies, and electrochemical measurements of cells and biomolecules. Their chemical stability and reliable performance support experiments that investigate cell signaling, tissue function, and interactions between living systems and biomedical devices.

Standard Electrode Potentials

On comparing the reactivity of silver and lead, it is observed that the two ionic species, Ag+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq), show a difference in their redox reactivity towards copper: the silver ion undergoes spontaneous reduction, while the lead ion does not. This relative redox activity can be easily quantified in electrochemical cells by a property called cell potential. This property is commonly known as cell voltage in electrochemistry, and it is a measure of the energy which accompanies the charge...
