Intra-alveolar Pressure

Intra-alveolar pressure is the pressure of air within the alveoli, the microscopic sacs where pulmonary gas exchange occurs, and it helps drive ventilation. During inspiration, expansion of the thoracic cavity increases lung volume and lowers intra-alveolar pressure below atmospheric pressure, drawing air inward; during expiration, reduced lung volume raises it above atmospheric pressure, pushing air outward, consistent with Boyle’s law. The relationship among intra-alveolar pressure, atmospheric pressure, and lung volume is central to understanding breathing mechanics, airflow, and respiratory disorders. Measuring or modeling these pressure changes supports research in pulmonary physiology and clinical assessment of ventilation.

An ultrasound probe coupled with a pressure sensor is used to assess the intra-compartmental pressure of the leg by directly measuring the compartment fascia flattening pressure (CFFP). This non-invasive protocol will provide reliable assessment of the pressure inside the anterior muscular compartment of the lower leg.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Here we describe the model and approach to study functions of pulmonary alveolar macrophages in cancer metastasis. To demonstrate the role of these cells in metastasis, the syngeneic (4T1) model of breast cancer in conjunction with the depletion of alveolar macrophage with clodronate liposomes was used.
