K Strategists

K strategists are organisms that produce relatively few offspring and invest substantial energy in their growth, survival, and reproduction, a life-history pattern associated with populations near environmental carrying capacity. Their strategy typically includes late maturity, larger body size, repeated reproduction, and extensive parental care, while strong density-dependent competition favors traits that improve survival rather than rapid population growth. Common examples include elephants, primates, and many large birds and mammals. Studying K strategists helps biologists understand population regulation, resource competition, life-history evolution, and how species respond to stable or changing environments.
