Leukopenia

Leukopenia is an abnormally low number of circulating white blood cells, the immune cells that help protect the body from infectious agents and other threats. It develops when the bone marrow produces too few leukocytes, when cells are destroyed or consumed faster than they are replaced, or when they become sequestered in tissues such as the spleen; reduced neutrophil numbers are especially important for host defense. In biology and medicine, leukopenia is evaluated through complete blood counts and differential analysis. Identifying its cellular basis helps assess infection risk, investigate underlying disease or treatment effects, and guide monitoring and clinical management.
