Light Harvesting Complex

A light-harvesting complex is a group of pigment-binding proteins that captures sunlight and channels its energy into photosynthesis. Chlorophylls, carotenoids, and related pigments absorb photons across complementary wavelengths, then transfer the resulting excitation energy between neighboring molecules through resonance energy transfer until it reaches a reaction center. There, the energy drives charge separation and initiates the electron-transfer reactions that convert light into chemical energy. Studying light-harvesting complexes helps explain photosynthetic efficiency, energy flow in plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria, and the adaptation of organisms to different light environments. Their architecture also informs research on artificial photosynthesis and solar-energy technologies.

Marginating-hepatic leukocytes exhibit unique characteristics and distinct immunological functions compared to other leukocyte populations. Here we describe a method for selective harvesting of this specific hepatic cell population, through forced perfusion of the liver of rats or mice. Marginating-hepatic leukocytes seem critical in determining susceptibility to hepatic-related diseases and metastases.

The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...
