Lipid Distribution Evaluation

Lipid Distribution Evaluation is the assessment of where lipids are located and how their abundance varies among cells, tissues, or subcellular compartments, providing insight into biological organization and function. It typically combines lipid-sensitive labeling or staining with microscopy or quantitative analysis to identify spatial patterns, compare lipid-rich regions, and detect changes under defined conditions. In biology, these evaluations help characterize membrane composition, energy storage, signaling, and lipid transport, while supporting research on development, metabolism, cellular stress, and disease. The resulting distribution profiles can reveal altered lipid homeostasis and guide studies of mechanisms that regulate cellular structure and function.

Nile red staining of fixed Caenorhabditis elegans is a method for quantitative measurement of neutral lipid deposits, while oil red O staining facilitates qualitative assessment of lipid distribution among tissues.

Evaluating the Intracellular Distribution of Virus-Derived Peptide-Modified Antibody Conjugates

This video demonstrates the process of assessing the intracellular distribution of virus-derived peptide-modified antibody conjugates using confocal microscopy. The viral-derived nuclear localization sequence directs antibody-conjugates within the cytoplasm, confirmed through immunostaining and fluorescence measurement.

Microscopic analysis of γH2AX foci, which form following the phosphorylation of H2AX at Ser-139 in response to DNA double-strand breaks, has become an invaluable tool in radiation biology. Here we used an antibody to mono-methylated histone H3 at lysine 4 as an epigenetic marker of actively transcribing euchromatin, to evaluate the spatial distribution of radiation-induced γH2AX formation within the nucleus.

Structure of Lipids

2020

Lipids include a diverse group of compounds that are largely nonpolar in nature. This is because they are hydrocarbons that include mostly nonpolar carbon-carbon or carbon-hydrogen bonds. Non-polar molecules are hydrophobic (“water fearing”), or insoluble in water. Lipids perform many different functions in a cell. Cells store energy for long-term use in the form of fats. Lipids also provide insulation from the environment for plants and animals. For example, they help keep aquatic birds and...
