Lymph Node Dissection

Lymph node dissection is a surgical procedure that removes one or more groups of lymph nodes to examine or treat disease, particularly cancer. During the operation, clinicians identify lymphatic tissue near a primary tumor, excise selected nodes, and send them for histopathological analysis to detect metastatic cells and assess disease spread. In biology and medicine, this procedure helps clarify how tumors travel through the lymphatic system, guides staging and treatment decisions, and can provide regional disease control. However, disrupting lymphatic drainage may cause complications such as lymphedema, making careful patient selection and ongoing monitoring important.

Two-photon imaging has uncovered lymphocyte motility and cellular interactions within the lymph node under basal conditions and durring an immune response 1. Here, we demonstrate adoptive transfer of T cells, isolation of lymph nodes, and imaging motility of CD4+ T cells in the explanted lymph node.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA The lymphatic system has two main functions: to return extracellular fluid back to the venous circulation and to expose antigenic substances to the immune system. As the collected fluid passes through lymphatic channels on its way back to the systemic circulation, it encounters multiple nodes consisting of highly concentrated clusters of...

To follow the progression of an immune response over time within the same mouse, lymph nodes can be sequentially removed by surgery. Here, we describe how this technique can be performed.

A Dissection Method to Harvest Murine Popliteal Draining Lymph Nodes for Ex Vivo Imaging

This video demonstrates a dissection technique to harvest popliteal draining lymph nodes from the mouse hind legs. Lymph nodes play a critical role in bridging innate and adaptive immunity, and harvesting intact lymph nodes — with a preserved tissue structure and cellular viability — can help study local and systemic immune responses.

Single-port Non-liposuction Endoscopic Axillary Lymph Node Dissection in Breast Cancer Surgery

This study describes a standardized surgical procedure for single-port endoscopic axillary lymph node dissection without liposuction in breast cancer. Indicated for patients with biopsy-confirmed nodal metastasis or positive sentinel lymph nodes, the technique emphasizes preservation of critical structures, particularly the intercostobrachial nerve, to reduce postoperative morbidity and optimize functional recovery.
