Molybdenum Blue Colorimetry

Molybdenum blue colorimetry is a spectrophotometric technique for measuring inorganic phosphate and other analytes that form molybdate-containing complexes, making it useful for biochemical and environmental studies. Under acidic conditions, phosphate reacts with molybdate to produce a phosphomolybdate complex, which a reducing agent converts into an intensely blue molybdenum compound; the color intensity, measured by absorbance, reflects analyte concentration. In biology, this method supports phosphate determination in water, culture media, food samples, and biological extracts, helping researchers assess nutrient availability, metabolic activity, and phosphorus cycling. Its sensitivity, relatively simple workflow, and compatibility with quantitative assays make it a widely used analytical method.

The preparation and exfoliation of CaCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 are described. Upon stirring in hot water, CaCuSi4O10 spontaneously exfoliates into monolayers, whereas BaCuSi4O10 requires ultrasonication in organic solvents. Near infrared (NIR) imaging illustrates the NIR emission properties of these materials, and aqueous dispersions of these nanomaterials are useful for solution processing.
