Mouse Lung Function

Mouse lung function refers to the physiological performance of the respiratory system in mice, including ventilation, gas exchange, airway resistance, and lung compliance. Air moves through the conducting airways to the alveoli, where differences in pressure drive inhalation and exhalation while oxygen and carbon dioxide cross the alveolar-capillary barrier. Researchers assess these functions using measurements such as respiratory flow, pressure, tidal volume, and responses to controlled challenges. These data help characterize normal pulmonary physiology and reveal changes caused by inflammation, infection, genetic mutations, environmental exposures, or experimental treatments, supporting studies of respiratory disease and evaluation of potential therapies.

This paper describes a striaghforward and efficient method of intubating mice for pulmonary function measurements or pulmonary instillation, that allows the mice to recover and be studied at later times. The procedure involves an inexpensive fiberoptic light source that directly illuminates the trachea.

Transgenic mice or viral vectors have been used to increase protein expression within the lung. However, these techniques are time-consuming, technically challenging and have off-target effects that can confound results. Our protein transfection protocol uses a lipid based transfection reagent and an ultrafine microsprayer to uniformly deliver active protein to lung cells.
