Natural Antioxidant

Natural antioxidants are compounds produced by plants, animals, and microorganisms that help limit oxidative damage by controlling reactive oxygen species and free radicals. They work primarily by donating electrons or hydrogen atoms to unstable molecules, interrupting chain reactions, and, in some cases, binding metal ions that promote oxidation; biological antioxidant enzymes provide related protection within cells. Important examples include polyphenols, carotenoids, and vitamins C and E, which contribute to cellular defense and food stability. Studying natural antioxidants supports research in cellular biology, nutrition, food preservation, and the development of strategies to manage oxidative stress.

Comparative Study on the Polysaccharide Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Hippophae gyantsensis

2025

This study compared the polysaccharide contents of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis Rousi and Hippophae gyantsensis (Rousi) Y. S. Lian obtained through hot water extraction and quantified through phenol-sulfuric acid colorimetry. We also investigated in vitro antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from these two Hippophae species through 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging experiments.

Nature and Nurture

Many human characteristics, like height, are shaped by both nature—in other words, by our genes—and by nurture, or our environment. For example, chronic stress during childhood inhibits the production of growth hormones and consequently reduces bone growth and height. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of variation in height is due to genetic differences among individuals, and 10-30% of variation in height is due to differences in the environments that individuals experience, such as differences...

Fitness Widespread variation of phenotypes in natural populations provides the raw material for evolution, which is the change in the inherited traits of populations over successive generations. Natural selection is one of the main mechanisms of evolution and requires variable traits to be heritable and associated with differential survival and/or reproductive success. Phenotypes that correlate with greater success will have more offspring that survive to reproduce in the next generation, and...

Simulating Natural Selection ExpandTo begin, cut the white, black, and gray pipe cleaners into quarters, which should produce a total of 100 pieces that are 3 inches long. Then, cut the green pipe cleaners in the quantities and lengths specified in the video, taking care to minimize waste. This approximates a normal distribution of lengths and should result in an additional 100 pieces total. NOTE: One 12-inch pipe cleaner should yield multiple lengths, for example, a 5-inch piece and a 7-inch...

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles, Judith Danovitch, and Asheley Landrum—University of Louisville Children have many tools they use over the course of development to learn from adults. Perhaps the earliest tool is imitation, simply copying what they see an adult do or say. However, children actually learn much more effectively than one might expect if they were only imitating. This is because, when it comes to learning and teaching, children and adults have a special relationship.
