Open Arm Entries

Open arm entries are a behavioral measure that counts how often an animal enters the exposed arms of an elevated plus maze, providing an index of exploratory behavior and anxiety-related avoidance. During testing, the animal moves among two open and two enclosed arms, and an entry is typically recorded when all four paws cross into an open arm; the number of entries reflects the balance between exploration and aversion to exposed spaces. Researchers use this measure in behavioral neuroscience to assess anxiety-like responses, evaluate stress effects, and investigate how genetic, environmental, or pharmacological manipulations influence locomotor and exploratory behavior.
