Ophthalmic Artery

The ophthalmic artery is a major blood vessel of the orbit that supplies the eye, surrounding tissues, and parts of the visual system, making it essential for ocular structure and function. It usually arises from the internal carotid artery and enters the orbit through the optic canal alongside the optic nerve, where it branches into vessels such as the central retinal, ciliary, and muscular arteries. These branches deliver oxygen and nutrients to the retina, choroid, extraocular muscles, and orbital tissues. Studying the ophthalmic artery supports understanding of visual physiology, orbital anatomy, vascular disorders, and procedures involving retinal or intracranial blood flow.

Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems

Ophthalmic drug delivery faces major limitations due to poor absorption across the corneal membrane. This process is primarily driven by diffusion and is influenced by two main factors: the physicochemical properties of the drug and tear drainage. Most ophthalmic drugs, such as pilocarpine, epinephrine, atropine, and local anesthetics, are weak bases. They are typically formulated at an acidic pH to enhance chemical stability. However, this leads to high ionization, reducing their ability to...

(2019)This video demonstrates a non-invasive ophthalmic drug delivery method for targeted neuromodulation. The drug is delivered via eye drops, absorbed into the circulation, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and activates specific neuronal receptors.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Modified Technique for Coronary Artery Ligation in Mice

The surgical procedure used to induce experimental myocardial infarction in mice begins with left thoracotomy between the third and the fourth ribs in order to visualize the anterior surface of the heart and left lung. The left coronary artery is ligated, the chest is closed and the mouse is allowed to recover spontaneously.
