Pds 1000 System

The PDS 1000 System is a biolistic particle-delivery instrument that introduces genetic material into cells and tissues, making it useful for experimental gene transformation. It uses high-pressure helium to accelerate DNA-coated gold or tungsten microparticles toward a target, allowing the particles to penetrate cell walls or membranes and release their cargo inside cells. Researchers apply this system in plant biology and other areas of biotechnology to generate transient or stable genetic transformations, analyze gene function, and produce engineered cells or tissues. Its versatility supports studies of gene expression, functional genomics, and genetic engineering when biological materials are difficult to transform by other methods.

A high-sensitivity photonic micro sensor was developed for electric field detection. The sensor exploits the optical modes of a dielectric sphere. Changes in the external electric field perturb the sphere morphology leading to shifts in its optical modes. The electric field strength is measured by monitoring these optical shifts.

Transgenic worms are commonly used in C. elegans research. Described is a simple, yet effective, protocol to introduce transgenes into worms using biolistic bombardment with DNA-coated gold particles. The effort involved and results of bombardment compare favorably with microinjection for the generation of transgenic animals.
