Peltier Device Setup

Peltier device setup is the arrangement and operation of a thermoelectric module for precise heating or cooling, making it useful for controlling temperature in biological experiments. When direct current passes through paired semiconductor materials, the Peltier effect transfers heat from one face to the other, creating a cold side and a hot side; a heat sink or other thermal-management component removes excess heat. In biology, this setup supports temperature regulation for enzyme assays, cell-based studies, sample preservation, and laboratory instruments. Reliable thermal contact, electrical control, and monitoring help maintain stable experimental conditions and improve reproducibility.

We present a protocol to study the formation of hydrates in the presence of nonionic surfactants on the interface of a water droplet submerged in cyclopentane. The protocol consists of building a low-cost, programmable, temperature regulator. The temperature control system is combined with visualization techniques and internal pressure measurements.

Commercial smartwatches equipped with wearable sensors are increasingly being used in population studies. However, their utility is often constrained by their limited battery duration, memory capacity, and data quality. This report provides examples of cost-effective solutions to real-life technical challenges encountered during studies involving asthmatic children and elderly cardiac patients.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.

2013

In this protocol the fabrication, setup and basic operation of a microfluidic picoliter bioreactor (PLBR) for single-cell analysis of prokaryotic microorganisms is introduced. Industrially relevant microorganisms were analyzed as proof of principle allowing insights into growth rate, morphology, and phenotypic heterogeneity over certain time periods, hardly possible with conventional methods.
