Pierceable Sealing Film

Pierceable sealing film is a flexible laboratory covering used to close microplates, culture vessels, and sample containers while allowing access through selected locations. Its thin, compliant material forms a protective barrier against contamination, evaporation, and sample loss, yet can be penetrated by pipette tips or needles without removing the entire seal. In biological research, this balance between containment and accessibility supports cell culture, reagent incubation, nucleic acid preparation, and high-throughput assays. By reducing handling steps and limiting exposure of neighboring wells, pierceable sealing film helps preserve sample integrity, improve workflow consistency, and support reproducible laboratory experiments.

Encapsulation and Permeability Characteristics of Plasma Polymerized Hollow Particles

2012

We have used plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition to deposit thin films ranging from a few nm to several 100 nm on nano-sized particles of various materials. We subsequently etch the core material to produce hollow nanoshells whose permeability is controlled by the thickness of the shell. We characterize the permeability of these coatings to small solutes and demonstrate that these barriers can provide sustained release of the core material over several days.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

Optimized Sealing Process and Real-Time Monitoring of Glass-to-Metal Seal Structures

Key procedures to optimize the sealing process and achieve real-time monitoring of the metal-to-glass seal (MTGS) structure are described in detail. The embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is designed to achieve online monitoring of temperature and high-level residual stress in the MTGS with simultaneous environmental pressure monitoring.

We describe a live whole animal quantitative measurement for permeability of the embryonic zebrafish brain. The technique analyzes the ability to retain cerebrospinal fluid and molecules of different molecular weights within the neural tube lumen and quantifies their movement out of the ventricles. This method is useful for determining differences in epithelial permeability and maturation during development and disease.

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.
