Planar Cell Polarity

Planar cell polarity is the coordinated orientation of cells within the plane of a tissue, a process that helps organize multicellular structures beyond their apical-basal polarity. Core planar cell polarity proteins, including Frizzled, Vangl, and Celsr, become asymmetrically distributed across neighboring cells and coordinate cytoskeletal organization, cell shape, and directional movement. This signaling system guides processes such as convergent extension, hair follicle alignment, neural tube development, and the patterned arrangement of sensory structures. Studying planar cell polarity clarifies how tissues acquire spatial order and provides insight into developmental disorders and defects in organs such as the kidney.

Primary cilia influence various signaling pathways. The mammalian cochlea is ideal for examining planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling. Cilia dysfunction affects cochlear outgrowth, cellular patterning and hair cell orientation, readouts of PCP. Our goal is to analyze PCP signaling in mouse cochlea via phenotypic analysis, immunohistochemistry and scanning electron microscopy.

An Endothelial Planar Cell Model for Imaging Immunological Synapse Dynamics

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...
