Plant Defenses

Plant defenses are the structural, chemical, and physiological strategies plants use to reduce damage from herbivores, pathogens, and environmental stress. Constitutive barriers such as waxy cuticles, thorns, and tough cell walls provide continuous protection, while induced responses activate after detection of attack through signaling molecules such as jasmonates, salicylic acid, and ethylene. These signals can stimulate antimicrobial compounds, toxic metabolites, proteinase inhibitors, and localized cell death that restrict infection or deter feeding. Studying plant defenses helps explain ecological interactions, crop resistance, and plant immune signaling, supporting the development of more resilient crops and sustainable approaches to pest and disease management.

Defensive Tactics

2026

Defensive tactics are strategies companies employ to resist unwanted takeovers and protect their autonomy. These methods deter hostile bidders or improve acquisition terms, enabling companies to maintain control over their direction. Common strategies include the Poison Pill, Shark Repellent, Golden Parachute, and White Knight. The Poison Pill allows shareholders to purchase additional stock at a discount, diluting the acquirer’s stake and making the takeover more expensive. For instance,...

Analyzing the Effects of Cigarette Smoke on Antimicrobial Defense in Lung Epithelial Cells

Source: Li, T., et al. Studying Effects of Cigarette Smoke on Pseudomonas Infection in Lung Epithelial Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates how cigarette smoke extract weakens antimicrobial defense in lung epithelial cells by reducing AMP production, leading to increased bacterial invasion. The procedure measures intracellular bacterial load to assess the impact of smoke exposure on host-pathogen interactions.
