Ear Thickness Measurement

Ear thickness measurement is a quantitative biological technique used to assess changes in the thickness of the external ear, often as an indicator of tissue swelling or growth. It typically involves measuring the pinna at a standardized location with a micrometer or digital caliper, then comparing readings with baseline values, untreated controls, or measurements from the opposite ear. In experimental biology, this approach provides a simple, minimally invasive readout for inflammation, edema, immune responses, and effects of topical or systemic treatments. Repeated measurements can track disease progression or recovery and support objective comparison among experimental groups.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video describes the examination of the ear, beginning with a review of its surface and interior anatomy (Figure 1). The cartilaginous auricle consists of the helix, antihelix, earlobe, and tragus. The mastoid process is positioned just behind the earlobe. The slightly curving auditory canal ends at the tympanic membrane, which transmits sound...
