Recombinant Virus

A recombinant virus is a virus whose genetic material has been intentionally modified to combine sequences from different biological sources, making it a useful system for studying viral biology and gene function. Researchers create recombinant viruses by inserting, replacing, or deleting selected genes in a viral genome, often using molecular cloning or recombination in cultured host cells; the altered genome then directs production of virus particles carrying the engineered traits. In biology, these viruses support gene delivery, vaccine development, reporter assays, and studies of infection, replication, and host responses. Their design also enables controlled analysis of gene function and may improve targeted therapeutic strategies.

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection via a recombinant HBV reporter system. Upon infecting host cells, the recombinant viral genome expresses the luciferase reporter enzyme, which produces bioluminescence upon oxidizing its substrate — helping detect viral infection.
